The Success Rates Online Don't Tell the Full Picture
Look up sciatica surgery and you'll see 90% success rates everywhere. Most read that as 9 in 10 walking out pain-free.
That isn't what it means. There's no agreed definition of “success.” Depending on the hospital, it can mean:
- Less pain than before
- Getting back to work
- The patient simply saying they were satisfied
So a 9/10 that becomes a 6/10 is counted. Success doesn't mean pain-free — which is why more than a third are still on daily painkillers afterwards.
And it's an average built on people who'd had sciatica for weeks. If you've had it two years, that rate drops to about 50%.
